Last year on our wedding anniversary we had a small party at our house consisting of my parents, his parents, his brother and niece. The real reason behind our party was not to celebrate our 2 year anniversary but to announce that Joseph would soon be a Big Brother. We had decided to keep the sex of the baby a secret to us and everyone else. I wanted to wait to hear "It's a ___!" in the delivery room. We had numerous ultrasounds of the baby during my pregnancy because they suspected the baby had duodenal atresia (blocked intestine) and then he mentioned that she appeared to have a small jaw. During this whole time he seemed more concerned about the atresia than the jaw so I never really thought about the jaw. I was concerned that my baby was going to have to have surgery pretty soon after she was born, but was comforted by the fact that it was a highly successful surgery.
While in the prep room getting ready for the c-sec, Luke and I were so excited and nervous, making guesses with the nurses on the sex - expecting some dificulty but one that would last two weeks at the most. Whatever they gave me was making me shake, I wasn't cold and they said it was normal - I felt like my nerves were getting the best of me and I needed to stop shaking so I could be strong and not scared, but also so I could be still for the cut. When the baby was out Luke had the camera ready and with Joseph the Dr told him take pictures, this time one of the nurses said take a picture of the clock (my mind - somethings wrong); there was a weak cry and a voice saying it was a girl - it was a excited voice but could still tell that it wasn't a normal excited it's a girl. The ladies in the room were thrilled we didn't know because no one really waits anymore - that is why that stuck out to me. I think they were telling me something was wrong but it was going to be ok - then finally the NICU dr brought her by to let us glimpse at her before he wisked her away to work on her - he pointed out some problems he could see. To be honest with you I really don't remember what he was saying - all I remember was that she had a lot of hair and no ear on the side I could see.
I was told I could not see her until I was able to walk on my own, so Luke and both sets of our parents went to see her and took pictures to bring back to me. I didn't like them, luke and my mom kept assuring me she was beautiful in person. The epidural was making me itch like crazy so they went ahead and took it out the next morning - that evening I was able to get up and walk. Finally I went down with Luke, Amanda and Tammy to see her and she was very beautiful - those first pictures made me mad because they didn't capture my little girls beauty.
